The Nike-X is one of my favorite '70s kits. This design was inspired by air defense missles. The real Nike-X project was begun, but cancelled before it saw the light of day, this is only a suggestion as to what the real one would have looked like. The great Black & White decals are the highlight of the design. I have modified this kit by adding a altimeter payload bay ("Iris"), which adds 3 inches and 17.5 grams of weight. It also got a nomex cloth to replace wadding and a better nylon cloth parachute. Nothing is too good for my little Nikey. Of course, now she's just a bit too heavy to fly safely with A8-3 motors. (Iris is named after the Greek god of the rainbow. She is a messenger of the gods, linking the gods with humanity.)

Perfect flight and recovery. Altimeter reading was measured as 820 feet - no way, definately an error! Estimating no more than about 400+ feet. Either way, the C6-5 is a good motor for this now heavier model.

This closeup of the tail section shows the fake booster stage. It would be pretty cool if it was a real 2-stage model.

This is the Nike-X in the original stock configuration. This model as shown without the Iris payload, stands 23.4 inches tall and weighs 78.5 grams, as it is outfitted with a nomex cloth and nylon parachute.

Perfect flight and recovery. With the B6-4 the altitude was a bit low with added Iris weight, but the new Nylon chute and nomex cloth worked well. Caught in mid-air, never touched ground. Only measured 182 feet - safe, but not impressive.
